MK Danny Danon (Likud) has begun collecting signatures from members of the central elections committee calling to ban radical Arab MK Hanin Zoabi from running in elections this coming March.
Danon’s campaign to ban the Balad party MK from campaigning for the 20th Knesset is based on article 7A of The Knesset Basic Law, which disallows candidates who call for “armed struggle, by an enemy state of terrorist organization, against the State of Israel.”
Zoabi has openly supported Hamas – the Islamist terrorist movement sworn to Israel’s destruction – on numerous occasions, most notoriously when she voiced sympathy for the Hamas murderers of three Israeli teenagers last summer. That statement earned her a six-month ban from the Knesset plenum, but Danon said that punishment did not go far enough.
“There is not enough space to contain all the statements and acts by MK Zoabi, but there is no doubt that among them there is enough and more to clearly prove her dangerous and radical ideology against the State of Israel,” Danon said in a statement.
“It would be enough to cite… the contents of MK Zoabi’s statements against the State during Operation ‘Protective Edge’, and the statements of the spokesman of the Hamas terrorist group, which was published on the Israel Hayom website on 18.7.14 [which read]: ‘We salute Hanin Zoabi on her stand on the side of the Palestinians. Hanin Zoabi is a proud Palestinian who has an enormous amount of patriotism. If only all the Arab politicians acted like her and took an example from her.'”
Danon was referring to an article Zoabi wrote which was published on Hamas’s website during the war, in which she encouraged Arab states to “besiege” Israel, among other things.
In light of such glowing praise from Hamas, said Danon, “It is clear to everyone that it is incumbent upon the State of Israel to protect itself, and to prevent the candidacy of MK Zoabi into the 20th Knesset.
Among other similar expressions of support for Hamas and terrorism against Israelis by Zoabi are a speech in which she said that Israel has “no right to a normal life” and a later address claiming that “the Israeli occupation” was behind the murder of Israelis in Bulgaria. She has also declared that Israel should “thank her” for allowing Jews to live in the Jewish State.
More recently, Israel’s state attorney Shai Nitzan recommended the radical Arab MK be criminally indicted over an incident in which she publicly incited Arab youths in Nazareth to attack Israeli police officers. The Attorney General has yet to respond to the recommendation.
